Kumgang

Located 100 km south of Wonsan, standing at some 1,700 metres high, covering 40 kilometres from East to West and 60 kilometres from North to South, Kumgang is one of the most scenic areas of the Korean Peninsula with wonderful scenic spots, valleys, waterfalls, coastline and historic sites, some of which are best enjoyed explored by hiking, whilst taking in the fresh mountain air.

The area is also rich in flora and fauna with about 130 species of birds, 9 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibians and 30 species of fishes, more than 2350 species of plants growing around the mountain. For centuries, the Kumgang region has been internationally known for its beauty. However, it has not been accessible to the public until the end of the 1990s due to the division of Korea peninsula. Towards 1990s, a part of the area was re-opened to Western tourists. Initially it was only accessible by ferry from South Korea but since 2003, it is also possible to arrive by coach. The Mount Piro is the highest peak in the Kumgang region.

The area houses many historical temples and places of worship as well as various monuments to Kim Il Sung. Moreover, there are several major restaurants for the handling international guests, a traditional Korean bathhouse with local geothermal source and a large convention center.
